I first visited Morocco 18 years ago, with my partner, as backpackers during a gap year. We started in Tangiers where we’d arrived by boat ferry from Spain, then rode an overnight train to Marrakech. We stayed in a modest riyad in the middle of the medina and I delighted in having an open air courtyard to enjoy tea and breakfast every morning. I was completely taken by the ancient charm of the souks and the renowned Place Jemaa el-Fnaa, which transformed at night into a vibrant panorama of music, vendors, food stalls, families, snake charmers, and street performers.
From Marrakech, we visited Essaouira, Casablanca, and Fez by bus. I got to experience so many aspects of Morocco, the landscape, its natural beauty, and the warmth of its people. It's not an overstatement to say that Morocco is a feast for the eyes. From its vibrant souks, ornate architecture, and the colorful cacophony of its streets, I fell in love with just about everything during that first visit.
